President Tinubu Sets Up Committee to Restore Peace in Benue After Deadly Attack

President Bola Tinubu has created a special committee to help bring lasting peace to Benue State after a terrible attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, where about 200 people were killed last Friday.

The peace committee includes former Benue governors Gen Atom Kpera (retd.), Senator George Akume, Senator Gabriel Suswam, and Samuel Ortom. Also part of the team are traditional rulers HRM Prof. James Ayatse (Paramount Ruler of Tiv Nation) and HRM Dr. John Elaigwu (Paramount Ruler of Idomaland).

At a town hall meeting in Makurdi, the state capital, President Tinubu urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to lead the peace efforts. He emphasized the importance of working with local leaders, federal officials, and residents who are not originally from Benue.

He said,

“Let us meet again in Abuja to create a lasting peace plan. I am ready to support this peace effort. We will find peace and turn this tragedy into growth.”

The meeting included government officials, traditional rulers, former governors, and governors from neighboring states such as Kwara, Imo, Kogi, Plateau, Ondo, and Nasarawa. The Governor of Nasarawa, Abdullahi Sule, was also present, as Tinubu stressed the need for teamwork between Benue and Nasarawa states.

“We are here to govern and protect lives, not to bury people. We want peace, development, and prosperity for all,” the President said.

He called on the people of Benue to support the governor and work together for peace.

Attack Details and Government Response

On June 13, armed herders attacked Yelewata village, killing many people, including those who had already been displaced by earlier violence. Amnesty International and local reports say at least 100 people were killed, some are missing, and many others were injured. The police say about 200 people died.

The Benue State government has launched a search for the attackers, but there are fears more violence could happen as the rainy season begins—an important time for farming and grazing.

Pope Francis prayed for the victims of this “terrible massacre.”

At the meeting, President Tinubu ordered the police and military to arrest those responsible quickly.

“Police, why haven’t there been arrests yet? We must catch these criminals,” Tinubu said.

He thanked the military for their efforts but urged better intelligence and quicker action to prevent more attacks.

Tinubu also asked the governor to provide land for ranching and told the Minister of Agriculture to follow up.

He encouraged people to donate blood to help victims being treated at the Benue State Teaching Hospital, where he had visited earlier.
