PDP’s Segun Sowunmi Open to Working With Tinubu, Says He’ll Resign If Appointed

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has declared his readiness to work with President Bola Tinubu and said he would formally resign from the opposition party if offered a role in the current administration.

Sowunmi made the statement on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, following a recent meeting with President Tinubu.

“There has never been a doubt that I can work with him. None at all,” Sowunmi said.

When asked directly if he would accept a political appointment, he replied, “I don’t do that type of nonsense. If I’m going to work with the president, I will leave the PDP. I wouldn’t mix the two.”

Despite previously criticizing the APC-led government — calling it “rudderless” and accusing it of “ethnic concentration and lopsidedness” — Sowunmi now praises Tinubu’s leadership qualities.

“Yes, I held those views at a point,” he admitted. “But I’ve also known the president for a long time. He is mentally and psychologically alert, and I understand how he thinks.”

Sowunmi recalled a recent meeting with Tinubu, where the president asked if he was interested in a government appointment. He compared the encounter to his only prior appointment under former Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, where he earned a reputation for bluntness.

“Credit to Otunba Daniel — he gave me a chance even though I could be a pain in meetings. I can’t stand sycophancy. I always prefer to get straight to the point.”

While Sowunmi has not confirmed receiving any formal offer, his remarks have further stirred speculation about ongoing political realignments, especially within the PDP.
