Nigeria’s First Female Fighter Pilot, Kafayat Sanni, Wins Top Awards in Ghana
Flight Lieutenant Kafayat Sanni, Nigeria’s first female fighter pilot, has once again made history—this time at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) in Accra.
Sanni emerged as the Best Allied Student and also clinched the Best Assistant Commandant Paper Award during the College’s prestigious graduation ceremony held on Friday, which was attended by top military leaders and dignitaries from across Africa.
The announcement was made in Abuja on Saturday by Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
A Rising Star in African Military Aviation
Kafayat Sanni first rose to national and international prominence in 2019 when she was officially decorated as the first female fighter pilot in Nigerian Air Force history, following intensive training in the United States.
Since then, she has flown the Alpha Jet, and also served as a prolific instructor on the Super Mushshak, mentoring the next generation of NAF pilots.
According to Gabkwet, “Her exceptional performance at GAFCSC is a testament not only to her personal excellence and discipline, but also to Nigeria’s growing influence in regional military education and its commitment to gender inclusion in defence leadership.”
Strategic Symbol of Progress
Sanni’s achievement is seen as a major boost for the Nigerian Armed Forces’ efforts toward gender equality and youth excellence in defence. Her success is also credited to the NAF’s strategic focus on talent development, led by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.
“This accomplishment reflects the Nigerian Air Force’s continued investment in human capital under visionary leadership,” the statement read.
