Kano Expands Campaign Against Open Defecation, Adds Six More LGAs

The Kano State Government has stepped up its campaign to end open defecation, with six more local government areas joining the initiative aimed at improving hygiene and public health.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Mustapha Muhammad, the new additions bring the total number of participating LGAs to 26. Out of these, 15 LGAs have already achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, and certificates of attainment will soon be issued to them.

The campaign is being carried out in partnership with UNICEF and is implemented through the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) under the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development.

As part of the effort, the government has distributed key hygiene and awareness tools, including:

Information and education materials

Improved latrine covers

Tippy Tap handwashing kits

Public sensitization banners

“We’re Changing Behaviour, Not Just Distributing Materials” — RUWASA Boss

Speaking to journalists, RUWASA Managing Director, Shamwilu Abdulkadir Isa, emphasized that the goal is not just about handing out items but encouraging lasting behavioral change.

> “For Kano to be fully open defecation-free, everyone has to be involved. This is not a job for the government alone,” he said.

Isa praised the political support from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, noting that strong backing from leadership has been vital to the progress made so far.

> “Without His Excellency’s support, we wouldn’t have gotten this far,” he added.

To further the goal, the government has also provided sustainable sanitation solutions, such as SATO toilet pans, to communities in the already-certified 15 ODF LGAs.

Public places like motor parks, Tsangaya schools, and markets are also being targeted in the ongoing hygiene campaign.

Newly Added LGAs

The six newly added LGAs in the current phase are:

Sumaila

Tudun Wada

Doguwa

Tofa

Bunkure

Garun Malam

Isa confirmed that the state government has released counterpart funding to support the campaign’s expansion in these areas and expressed optimism that they will soon be certified as ODF-compliant.
