FG Suspends Two Correctional Officers Over Attempt to Procure Passport for Inmate
The Federal Government has suspended two personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for attempting to facilitate the issuance of an international passport to an inmate—an action deemed a serious breach of protocol.
The suspension was confirmed in a statement on Saturday by the NCoS Public Relations Officer and Deputy Controller of Corrections, Umar Abubakar.
Abubakar described the incident as a case of misconduct uncovered through the Nigeria Immigration Service’s automated passport application system, a result of ongoing reforms and inter-agency collaboration under the Ministry of Interior.
“This misconduct was detected through the automated passport application process and other holistic reforms within the Nigeria Immigration Service,” Abubakar stated.
The incident, which occurred roughly two weeks ago, directly violated established rules and was considered highly unacceptable and impermissible by the Service.
As a result, Abubakar disclosed that the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board—chaired by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo—has taken disciplinary action, including the immediate suspension of the two officers involved.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, reaffirmed the Service’s zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline, misconduct, and corruption.
“He has reiterated his commitment to maintaining discipline, transparency, and professionalism across all custodial centres in the country,” the statement read.
The NCoS emphasized that any personnel found engaging in corrupt practices or actions that undermine the integrity of the system will face immediate sanctions, including dismissal.
“The Service categorically states that any personnel found engaging in acts of misconduct, corruption, or sabotage will be shown the way out of the system,” Abubakar added.
