Wike Hands Over ICC Maintenance to Julius Berger, Vows End to Poor Facility Management

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said on Monday that the FCT Administration will sign an agreement with Julius Berger to take care of the newly renovated International Conference Centre (ICC).

Wike said this after inspecting the renovated ICC, the Outer Southern Expressway to Wassa, and the road project at Gishiri.

He expressed concern over the poor maintenance of government buildings, calling it a serious problem in Nigeria.

Earlier in April 2024, Wike closed the ICC for eight months due to its poor condition, cancelling all scheduled events. He blamed the former managers, Integrated Facility Management Services Limited, for not maintaining the centre properly.

Wike then gave Julius Berger the job of renovating the centre and announced that after the work was done, it would be handed back to the Abuja Investment Company Limited.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Wike said, “Julius Berger, the company that built the centre, will now be in charge of its maintenance. We won’t allow any politician to manage it.”

He added, “One of Nigeria’s biggest problems is lack of maintenance, and we want to change that. The agreement with Julius Berger will make sure the centre is properly taken care of. We’re finalizing the terms, and once it’s signed, users of the centre will also pay for its upkeep.”
