President Tinubu Announces $2.2 Billion Health Sector Commitments Under Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday revealed that Nigeria has secured over $2.2 billion in health sector commitments through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, launched by his administration in December 2023.
Speaking at the inauguration of the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that the initiative comes with clear, measurable targets aimed at transforming Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Describing the AMCE project as a symbol of African resilience and innovation, the President hailed it as a significant step toward positioning Nigeria as a leading global healthcare hub.
The initiative, already underway, seeks to renovate more than 17,000 primary health centres, train 120,000 frontline healthcare workers, and double the national health insurance coverage within three years.
Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, provided further details in an official statement released Thursday.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the inauguration, President Tinubu underscored that the event was not just about opening a physical facility, but about showcasing Nigeria’s collective determination to overcome medical vulnerabilities.
Since taking office two years ago, Tinubu highlighted the government’s reforms and investments that have boosted local pharmaceutical production, enhanced regulatory frameworks, and expanded access to diagnostic services.
In his words, “Our efforts did not end there. In December 2023, we launched the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, securing over $2.2 billion in commitments with defined goals: renovating 17,000 primary health centres, training 120,000 frontline health workers, and doubling health insurance coverage within three years. These are milestones already in progress.”
The African Medical Centre of Excellence, developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London, is poised to become a premier facility for advanced medical treatment, training, and research.
Notably, the centre houses the largest stem cell laboratory in West Africa and plans to expand with a teaching hospital, nursing school, and residential accommodations for medical staff.
Paying tribute to Afreximbank President Professor Benedict Oramah, President Tinubu praised the bank’s visionary leadership for daring to envision solutions to Africa’s healthcare challenges.
“This achievement shows what is possible when African institutions address African challenges with African solutions,” he said.
The President also highlighted the critical role of infrastructure investment through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund in supporting these healthcare advancements.
