NNPCL Spokesperson Olufemi Soneye Resigns, Bows Out After Transformative Tenure



Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has officially stepped down from his role after 20 months of service.


In a heartfelt post shared via Facebook on Saturday, Soneye expressed gratitude to his colleagues, citing the need to focus more on family and personal commitments as the reason for his resignation.


> “I wish to inform you that I have stepped aside from my role as Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd. This decision will allow me to devote more time to my family and attend to personal responsibilities that now require my closer presence,” he wrote.




His announcement drew an outpouring of commendations from industry professionals and media colleagues.

A Respected Voice in Nigeria’s Energy Sector


Describing his time at NNPCL as an “honour,” Soneye said he was proud to have contributed to the transformation of the company during a pivotal era in Nigeria’s energy history.


> “It has been a profound honour to serve both the Company and our country… I remain a steadfast supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go,” he stated, while urging journalists to continue providing “balanced and constructive reportage.”




Soneye pledged his continued advocacy for NNPCL’s mission and commended the professionals he worked with for their dedication to national development.

A Distinguished Media Career


Soneye was appointed to his role on October 18, 2023, succeeding Garba Muhammad, who had served since August 2021. Before joining NNPCL, he built a decorated journalism career across Nigeria, Australia, and the United States.


He was Editor of the US Air Force One Magazine in Washington, D.C., and served as President of the Nigerian Media Practitioners in the U.S. capital. His affiliations include the Nigerian Union of Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, Society of Professional Journalists, and the Guild of Corporate Online Media Publishers.


Notably, he was awarded “Spokesperson of the Year” in both 2024 and 2025 by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), cementing his status as one of the country's most respected communication professionals.
