Nigerian Army Urges Public Support in Fight Against Insecurity
The Nigerian Army has appealed to the public for more support in its efforts to tackle banditry and terrorism across the country. It expressed concern that some residents of troubled communities were not providing timely information that could help security agencies stop attacks and arrest criminals.
Major General Obinna Onubogu, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, made this known during a media briefing on Saturday in Akure, Ondo State. The event was organised by the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Onubogu said the army is actively involved in operations in Benue, Plateau, Kwara, and other states affected by insecurity.
He explained that President Bola Tinubu recently gave clear orders for the military to take stronger action in areas affected by violent attacks, particularly in the North Central region.
“We are already on the ground in Benue and Plateau, but we need more cooperation from the public,” Onubogu said. “In many cases, people do not share helpful information with us. This slows our response time.”
He also pointed out that Nigeria is a large country and the army cannot be everywhere at once. Some attackers exploit these gaps to carry out their activities. He urged community members to alert the army in advance if they notice suspicious movements.
Onubogu said some of the attackers, including suspected herders involved in killings in Benue State, may not even be Nigerians, judging by their brutal actions.
He assured the public that the army is making serious plans to stop the violence, especially in Benue. He promised that in the coming weeks, new security arrangements will be put in place to bring peace to affected areas.
“Whatever it takes, we will make sure these violent attacks do not continue,” he added.
This comes after over 100 people were reportedly killed and many others injured in Yelewata, a community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
