APC Warns Suspended Rivers Governor Fubara: Only Real Peace Talks Can Stop Impeachment
The Rivers State branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, that he could still be impeached unless he truly tries to make peace with state lawmakers.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee, Tony Okocha, said that Fubara has not made any real effort to talk with or settle issues with the elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“I can tell you clearly that there is no peace effort going on in Rivers right now.
The suspended governor has not tried to make peace with the lawmakers.
Only a true and honest reconciliation can protect him from impeachment,” Okocha said.
At the same time, some youth groups in Rivers State asked President Bola Tinubu to bring back democratic leadership in the state and reinstate Fubara before Democracy Day on June 12.
Back on March 18, 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspended the governor, his deputy Prof Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state House of Assembly. He then appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the sole administrator for six months.
The crisis happened after a long-standing political fight between former governor and current Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and Fubara.
Although the governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have taken the President to court over the matter, recent meetings between Tinubu, Wike, and Fubara suggest that peace might be possible.
Speaking again in Abuja, Okocha said that even if Fubara decides to leave PDP and join the APC, that does not clear him of the wrong things he is accused of.
“The APC is not a dumping ground,” he said.
“The state of emergency and Fubara’s suspension were not political — they were because of his actions.”
“If he joins APC, it doesn’t mean he will be forgiven automatically. You can't just switch to APC and expect your wrongs to be erased. That’s not how it works.”
