Tinubu Commissions New Naval Ships and Helicopters to Boost Maritime Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated six new assets into the Nigerian Navy fleet — three Fast Patrol Boats (NNS SHERE, NNS FARO, and NNS IKOGOSI) and three AW109 Trekker helicopters (501, 502, and 503) — reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to maritime security.

The commissioning ceremony took place on Saturday in Lagos, with the President represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Bello Matawalle.

Tinubu emphasized the strategic importance of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain, describing the newly commissioned assets as “force multipliers” in the ongoing fight against piracy, oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes.

“The sea has remained a pillar of our nation’s economic prosperity. For nearly 70 years, the Nigerian Navy has stood guard over our blue waters,” he said.

He noted that the induction of the vessels and aircraft reflects the government’s resolve to empower national institutions and protect critical maritime resources.

Strong Navy, Strong Economy

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the needs of the Nigerian Navy, calling a capable navy “the cornerstone of a secure and prosperous economy.”

He also praised the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for his dedication to modernizing the fleet and bridging operational capability gaps.

“Today’s induction is the result of your strategic foresight,” he said, commending the naval leadership and its partners for turning vision into reality.

Unity, Partnerships, and Vigilance

Tinubu expressed appreciation to the National Assembly for its bipartisan support in funding and oversight, urging continued unity in the pursuit of maritime safety.

He also thanked international partners and technical collaborators, emphasizing that maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea is a shared global responsibility.

“The sea does not distinguish between political lines; it demands our collective vigilance,” Tinubu remarked.

To the officers and sailors tasked with operating the new naval assets, the President delivered a message of trust and responsibility:

“As you navigate these waters and skies, remember — the weight of Nigeria’s aspirations rests on your shoulders.”
