Buhari Urges Patience, Warns Against Politics Derailing Tinubu’s Reforms at Two-Year Mark

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration marks its second year in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has offered both praise and caution, urging Nigerians to manage their expectations while warning against allowing “nettlesome domestic politics” to undermine critical reforms.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari congratulated President Tinubu on reaching the midterm milestone and emphasized that the path to reform is gradual and not without challenges.

“Reforms don’t yield results overnight,” Buhari stated. “They require time, commitment, and collective effort. The necessary changes should not be sacrificed on the altar of political bickering.”

The statement, titled ‘Tinubu Gets Buhari’s Praise, Advice At Midterm’, acknowledged the economic hardships facing Nigerians, particularly among the poorest, due to inflation and other pressures.

Buhari stressed that tackling these issues cannot rest solely on the shoulders of government. “The private sector, communities, and every citizen must play a role in reducing poverty and improving livelihoods,” he said.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu’s administration has launched the Renewed Hope Agenda, which has included bold reforms such as the removal of petrol subsidies, the liberalization of the naira, and the repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan. However, these policies have also triggered a sharp rise in the cost of living, leading to growing public frustration.

Despite the economic challenges, Buhari encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful. “We must continue to support the APC government and maintain confidence in the country’s direction. Our expectations from government must remain realistic,” he advised.

On May 23, 2025, the All Progressives Congress officially endorsed Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, even as the opposition faces internal turmoil and defections.

Concluding his message, Buhari offered heartfelt congratulations to President Tinubu: “May you continue to lead with wisdom and compassion. I wish you continued strength and success in the years ahead
